The Hemingway District is the vital and historic business community on Oak Park Avenue from Lake Street to Pleasant in Oak Park, Illinois. Filled with independent retailers, an eclectic grouping of restaurants and dozens of service providers, the Hemingway District has been at the heart of Oak Park for nearly 100 years.
Over the years — and our group’s meeting minutes date back to the 1920s — our volunteer-based business association has been known by several names. For many years we were known as The ALPS ( The Avenue-Lake Plaza), then The Avenue, and now, since early 2013, we are The Hemingway District. The Ernest Hemingway Birth Home and Museum are just up the street, and both are open to the public.
The purpose of our association is to represent the interests of our business community members, plan business-building promotions and events, and to create a strong sense of community among our independent business owners.
Currently the president of The Hemingway District is Jim August. He is the owner of the Irish Shop, at the corner of Oak Park Avenue & North Blvd. You can reach Jim at firstname.lastname@example.org.
